Archie Thompson’s Hat-Trick: What’s next for Cahill and Melbourne City?

Archie Thompson takes a closer look at Round 7 of the 2017/18 Hyundai A-League season while eyeing what’s ahead in Round 8.

Sydney FC recovered from their hiccup against the Central Coast Mariners by beating the high-flying Newcastle Jets 2-1 in Round 7 to return to top spot on the table.

The Sky Blues also became the second Australian team, behind the Melbourne Victory, to hold all three domestic titles at once following their extra-time win over Adelaide United in Tuesday night’s FFA Cup final.

The Victory and Brisbane Roar claimed their first wins of the campaign with much-needed triumphs over the Perth Glory and Melbourne City respectively while the Western Sydney Wanderers and Wellington Phoenix match was postponed due to the poor state of the Spotless Stadium pitch.

Ahead of this weekend’s action, former Victory and Socceroos striker Thompson has cast his eye over what Round 8 has in store on Archie’s Hat-Trick, including the situation surrounding Tim Cahill and his future at Melbourne City.

Sydney win 3rd trophy for 2017
“I was part of the Victory team when we won all three in the calendar year and if anything, it boosts the confidence.

“It boosts the team going towards the end of the season, but it’s only early days obviously.”

5 draws for Wanderers, play Adelaide away next
“Adelaide will be very disappointed, morale will be down because of losing the FFA Cup.

“Wanderers haven’t won a match (since opening weekend) so all the moons and stars are aligning for the Wanderers to win that one.”

What’s next for Cahill & City?
“Cahill. City. Joyce. Is he (Cahill) playing enough football to go to the World Cup?

“He doesn’t think so.

“Whether we will see him come straight into the starting line-up on Friday night, let’s see, because there is a lot of turmoil at that City club.”

In Round 8, Football Nation will be covering a trio of matches as seen below:
