03 Nov Sydney FC Stay Unbeaten
Sydney FC are still unbeaten so far in season 2017/18, with an ugly goal from veteran Luke Wilkshire to take the three points in a 1-0 win over Melbourne City.
It was a slow paced start to the game, with the major concern over Tim Cahill who looked to have injured his ankle in the contest.
City had plenty of opportunities throughout the course of the first half, with Ross McCormack and Nick Fitzgerald squandering away chances to put their side in front at Half Time.
It stayed as a stalemate at Half Time with both sides failing to hit the board at the end of 45.
Sydney FC had a chance early on in the second half to get in front from a David Carney set piece free kick to Milos Ninkovic, who headed the ball over the bar.
Luke Wilkshire broke the deadlock on almost an hour, with an ugly looking goal from poor defending from Melbourne City to give the Sky Blues the lead.
Former Reds midfielders Iacopo La Rocca and Marcelo Carrusca both had opportunities to equalise the game late, with Sydney FC holding on for three points.
City and the Socceroos will now sweat on Cahill’s ankle injury, especially for the Socceroos who have a World Cup Playoff clash against Houndras.
