21 Nov Ange Postecoglou quits as Socceroos coach
Football Federation Australia is on the hunt for a new head coach following the resignation of Ange Postecoglou today.
The 52-year-old has stepped down from his post as Socceroos boss after four years at the helm. His tenure saw him lead the team to glory at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup and most recently, qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“After a great deal of thought and soul-searching, the journey for me as Socceroo coach ends,” Postecoglou said at a press conference this morning.
“I want to thank the Lowy family for giving me the opportunity to coach the Socceroos. I’ve had great support from the football community.”
He added: “It’s been the toughest decision. I just have an instinct I think it’s the right time for me, the right time for the organisation…”
Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chief Executive David Gallop paid tribute to the outgoing Socceroos manager, thanking him for his services over the last four years.
“It’s my privilege on behalf of Australian football to thank Ange for his service of the past four years,” said Gallop this morning.
Gallop mentioned at the press conference that the process to replace Ange at the helm will be a thought out process, and won’t rush to find his successor straight away.
“For the process going forward, we won’t be rushed.”
“We want to be successful in Russia. We need to continue a lot of the things that are already in place, but we also need to have an eye of the future.”
Postecoglou has been the head coach of the Socceroos since October 2013 and oversaw 22 wins, 12 draws and 15 losses from his 49 matches in charge of the national team.
