Gutsy Sydney slug out narrow win in Adelaide

Sydney FC came out of Round 9 with a hard fought win in the wet courtesy of a Bobo goal, claiming victory against Adelaide United 1-0.

The striker was the only goal scorer in a game based more on possession than shots on goal, with both teams having plenty of opportunities to score but taking few in the difficult conditions.

The game’s only goal came on the stroke of half-time when Josh Brillante picked out the run of Luke Wilkshire with a pinpoint pass, allowing the marauding right-back to slide the ball back into the path of a patiently waiting Bobo who expertly fired home with the inside of his left foot.

Adelaide dominated proceedings early, winning 3 corners in the first 5 minutes. They went close to going a goal up against the visiting Sydney in the first minute through Isaias, and went on to maintain possession of the ball for 97% of the first ten minutes of the match.

Reds attacker Nikola Mileusnic had chances – both early in the first and second halves – and should have converted with his head on both occasions only to miss the target.

Mark Ochieng was subbed out late in the game due to an injury, and manager Marco Kurz brought on youngster Jordan O’Doherty who showed some glimpses of talent.

Sydney managed to hold on in a drenched Coopers Stadium to stay on top of the table, and are now 5 points clear with Newcastle in second.

Adelaide have again failed to put up a fight against the Sky Blues, and head down to Melbourne to take on the struggling Victory next Friday night.
