26 Jun Glass “almost empty” for Australia’s soccer future: Davutovic
Herald Sun chief soccer writer David Davutovic believes the sport in Australia needs to reassess its entire structure, in the wake of the Socceroos being eliminated from the World Cup.
Australia’s 2-0 loss to Peru saw them finish at the bottom of Group C, and while admitting the Socceroos punched about their weight in terms of performance at the tournament, Davutovic has explained how the defeat means the sport has reached a critical crossroad.
ALL THE OVERNIGHT WORLD CUP ACTION
“In terms of Australian football’s future, the glass is almost empty,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“I think this is a time when Australian football needs to take stock, needs to ask some real hard questions of itself.
“We are talking about youth development, we are talking about the A-League, we are talking about all that sort of stuff.
“At the end of the day, I mean, the two blokes we were relying on to score the goals at the end were Tim Cahill, who is 38, and Daniel Arzani, who six months ago hadn’t played a senior game of football yet. A kid that talented, in any other country, would have been playing two years ago.
“We need to expand, we need to open up opportunities for younger players and then the Socceroos will be the beneficiary.”
