27 Jun Host of Euro clubs queueing up for Daniel Arzani
Daniel Arzani is the name on everybody’s lips right now in an Australian football sense.
The 19-year-old winger has impressed greatly for the Socceroos at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on the back of a sensational breakthrough season with Melbourne City in the A-League.
The club’s owners, City Football Group, are showing significant interest in securing the services of Arzani in a deal similar to that of Aaron Mooy who became a Manchester City player in 2016.
After a successful loan spell in England’s Championship with Huddersfield Town, the star Socceroos midfielder then joined the Premier League-bound Terriers for around $14 million.
According to the Herald Sun’s Chief Football Writer, David Davutovic, something comparable could occur with Arzani.
And a further move to Dutch powerhouse PSV Eindhoven is a distinct possibility given the link to current Socceroos boss Bert van Marwijk and his right-hand man Mark van Bommel.
“I think he’s played his last A-League game,” Davutovic said on SEN’s Road To Russia on The Sporting Capital with Jack Heverin.
“The issue for Melbourne City is that he’s only got a year to run on his contract so that doesn’t give them a lot of bargaining power.
“They obviously want to keep him in the City (Football) Group in very much an Aaron Mooy style deal.
“The problem with Arzani, whilst City Football Group have great contacts around the world and over in England, I’m not sure any of those really suit Arzani as some of the other options that have emerged.
“We are talking about some of the big clubs around the world including Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen but my information is that it looks more likely to be more of a stepping stone type move.
“Potentially over to Austria or Czech Republic or one of those types of teams, potentially even Holland.
“The interesting one here is that Socceroos assistant coach, Mark van Bommel, has just been confirmed as PSV Eindhoven’s head coach for next season and his father-in-law, who happens to be Bert van Marwijk, is likely to join him.
“I reckon they will make a big play for Arzani. The Dutch league (Eredivisie) is not as big a step as Leverkusen (German Bundesliga) or Juventus (Italian Serie A) where he’d be unlikely to play first-team football straight away.
“Melbourne City don’t have to sell him but if they don’t sell him now they run the risk of losing him for nothing in a year’s time.”
