22 Aug Graham Arnold promises brave and bold Socceroos
Socceroos coach Graham Arnold says he is eager to build on the foundations laid by his predecessor Bert van Marwijk.
Arnold was named as Van Marwijk’s replacement back in March before the Dutchman’s short stint as Australian boss concluded following a winless World Cup campaign in Russia.
The former Sydney FC gaffer will seek to implement his own attacking philosophy, while also looking to install a fearless mentality ahead of next year’s Asian Cup.
“I’ve probably got less time than Bert van Marwijk had before the World Cup,” Arnold told SEN Afternoons.
“My time is very limited, but by that game against the Korean Republic in November I want my strongest team available.
“We will bring our best players back to Australia and it’s all about preparation for the Asian Cup, we’ve only got those two camps together.
“It’s about building on what Bert did, Bert put in a great defensive structure in place.
“We will continue that but what we will add is the filter on top and that’s the attacking style, the pressing style and making sure with the ball we’re effective.
“Be brave to play and expect to win every game, don’t go out trying not to lose, go out to win.
“It’s about winning and that winning mentality, it’s the Australian way.”
The reigning Asian champions have been grouped with Syria, Palestine and Jordan, with the tournament getting underway in early January in the United Arab Emirates.
