Foord hits hat-trick as Matildas demolish Chile in second-half blitz

Caitlin Foord fired home a brilliant hat-trick as the Matildas crushed Chile 5-0 in Newcastle in front of 12,649 fans last night.

Alen Stajcic’s side were beaten 3-2 by Las Chicas de Rojo in Penrith on Saturday night, but rallied by producing a convincing performance, particularly in the second half, to win the International Series trophy 7-3 on aggregate.

The first half produced zero goals before the Aussies quickly found top gear and slammed on two in two minutes through Samantha Kerr and Foord herself.

Foord set up the 52nd minute opener for Kerr before netting from an acute angle in the 54th. The reunited attacking pairing were playing together for the first in over a year.

In the 67th minute, Foord bore down on Chilean keeper Christiane Endler, won possession, then turned and lifted the ball expertly into the back of an open net to make it 3-0 on the night.

Two minutes later, second-half sub Emily Gielnik fired home from just outside the area before Foord completed her treble with some quality control and a composed finish from close range in the 88th minute.

Foord, was delighted after the big win, telling Fox Sports: “It’s pretty awesome.

“I’ve been lacking a bit of confidence in front of goal so to put three away today I’m pretty happy with that.

“I don’t think we played badly in the first game we just couldn’t put it away and they finished their chances and that’s football sometimes.

“Today we didn’t want to do that again and we wanted to win in front of the home crowd and we’re just stoked we got the job done.”
