20 Nov “I wanted to breakdown”: Cahill on Socceroos farewell game
Australian legend Tim Cahill says his farewell game with the Socceroos was the first time he has cried on a football pitch, as he got caught up in the emotion of the night.
The Socceroos honoured Cahill with a 3-0 victory over Lebanon last night, and Australia’s leading goal kicker says hearing the fans’ appreciation for him was a moment to remember.

“I wanted to breakdown on the side of the pitch when the fans were cheering me to just come on the pitch,” Cahill told Fox Sports.
“I found it very difficult to keep my emotions in, it was the first time in my career I’ve cried on the football pitch and I’m proud of it.
“I’m leaving the game on a high with so many great memories with Australia, with my teammates.
“On behalf of all of them, I just want to say thank you to them for playing a big part in my career.”
Cahill also described his feelings towards the Australian shirt and what it means to him.

“A part of me feels so proud and happy,” he said.
“I didn’t want to cry inside because I’m so happy, this is such an amazing night but this shirt means everything to me.
“The moves I’ve made in my career have defined me as a person and I’ve always put my country first.
“It’s a bit surreal, I still can’t believe I’m fully retired as a Socceroo.”
