Muscat outlines Socceroos coaching ambition

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat has outlined his future ambition to secure the role as Australian national team manager.

Muscat’s coaching career began back in 2009 where he joined the Victory as an assistant under championship winning boss Ernie Merrick, before taking the reins as head coach, replacing Socceroos-bound Ange Postecoglou in 2013.

Since taking up the role, Muscat has led the A-League powerhouse to a league/cup double in 2015 and a second championship crown in 2018, but higher honours are on the agenda for the former Socceroos midfielder.

“Without doubt, I’ve not shied away from that,” Muscat told Peter Donegan on This is Your Sporting Life.

“I tell the younger players in our team to reach for the stars, whatever that looks like to you, reach for the stars.

“If you fall somewhere short you won’t be satisfied and I’m no different – I would love to manage the national team one day.

“As a player it’s the most humbling experience and most satisfying experience representing your nation, so I would love to do it as a coach as well and coach overseas at some point as well.

“Let’s just see how it goes, I understand there’s a process for all that to happen, you’ve got to be good at what you’re doing now to be able to get those opportunities, so that’s where all my focus is.”
