26 Nov Peacock slams “horrendous” Spotless Stadium surface
Fox Sports football host Adam Peacock has slammed the Spotless Stadium management team following the disgraceful state of the pitch for last Friday night’s A-League game between Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets.
Shards of plastic and nails were found prior to kick-off that were thought to have been blown onto the pitch, after an RNB concert that was held at the venue six days prior to the match.
Jets coach Ernie Merrick described the surface as a “disgrace” and that it resembled a carpark rather than a football pitch.
“If that stadium management decides that that was acceptable and demand full payment from Western Sydney Wanderers and think that everything was ok – they’re fair dinkum kidding,” Peacock told SEN Afternoons.
“That was one of the worst sporting venue surfaces I’ve ever seen in my life – that was horrendous.
“It wasn’t only the shards of plastic that had been blown onto the pitch with high Sydney winds from a hip-hop festival last week, and all the remnants of all the plastic glass which was smashed under stomping feet, but it was the actual playing surface – it looked like a patchwork quilt.
“It was horrible, absolutely horrible. They’ve got to look at themselves and there’s only so much the A-League can do.
"The only thing the A-League clubs can do is go out there and build their own stadiums and not have that problem.”
The Wanderers will continue to play home matches out of Spotless while the new Paramatta Stadium continues to be built.
