Arnold’s “tricky decision” surrounding injured Socceroo Mooy

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold faces a selection conundrum involving injured star Aaron Mooy, according to The Australian’s Ray Gatt.

Mooy suffered a knee injury in Huddersfield’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal last Saturday and will be reportedly sidelined for four-to-six weeks, meaning he is likely to miss a large portion of Australia’s Asian Cup defence in the UAE.

With the Socceroos’ squad set to be named, Arnold must decide whether to include the midfielder, while running the risk of not being able to replace him if he doesn’t recover from the medial ligament strain.

“It’s not a good sign for the Asian Cup unfortunately,” Gatt told SEN Breakfast.

“That’s going to be up to Graham Arnold because he’s got a very tricky decision here.

“Does he put him in his 23-man squad? If he does and he doesn’t make it he can’t replace him once the tournament has started – that could be an issue.

“He will most likely miss the group games and maybe be available for the Round of 16 or even the Quarter-Final.”

The 28-year-old confirmed his injury via Instagram.

Australia’s opening game of the Asian Cup is against Jordan on January 6th.
