12 Dec “People have become bored with the A-League”: Gatt
Chief soccer writer at The Australian, Ray Gatt, has demanded that A-League expansion plans go ahead for next season as people are becoming disillusioned with the competition.
The FFA board are set to meet today to decide whether two new licences will be introduced for the 2019/20 season, with reports suggesting expansion could be delayed until 2020/2021.
Gatt would like to see four new teams introduced over the next two seasons to increase the league to either 14 or 16 teams.
“I’d be very disappointed if they don’t bring in two new teams for next season,” Gatt told SEN Breakfast.
“The A-League is struggling at the moment, it’s stagnant, we need a buzz and we need a huge lift.
“It needs to be revitalised and we need two new teams next season and they need to go one step further and announce another two for the following season.

“It’ll be a huge help, we need a lift – people have become bored with the A-League.
“The same 10 teams playing each other three times a season, and sometimes with finals and FFA Cup, they could play each other five times.
“That’s not good enough.”
Team 11, Western Melbourne Group, South Melbourne, Southern Expansion from Sydney's south, South West Sydney and Canberra are the six bids vying for two A-League licences.
