Manchester United announce interim manager

Manchester United have announced former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as interim manager until the end of the season.

It comes a day after the sacking of Jose Mourinho with United currently languishing in 6th position in the Premier League.

Solskjaer, 45, scored 126 goals in 11 seasons at Old Trafford, including the dramatic winner in the 1999 Champions League final.

The Norwegian will be joined by former United assistant Mike Phelan with Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna remaining in their roles after working under Mourinho before his departure.

"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role," Solskjaer said.

"This is an opportunity I had to take.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club."

Solskjaer’s first match in charge is against former club Cardiff City on Saturday.

United will make a full-time appointment at the end of the season.
