Injured Socceroo Mooy “ready to go” for Asian Cup

Chief soccer writer at The Herald Sun, Dave Davutovic, says he has been informed by the FFA that injured Socceroos star Aaron Mooy will be fit to participate in next month’s Asian Cup in the UAE.

Mooy’s club, Huddersfield Town, ruled him out for three months due to a torn Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) in his right knee, only to be named in Australia’s 23-man squad by coach Graham Arnold yesterday.

The midfielder will be available for Australia’s second and third group stage games against Palestine and Syria, according to Davutovic.

“The real focus will be on Aaron Mooy who’s been picked in this squad despite his club, Huddersfield Town, only a couple of weeks ago ruling him out until February,” Davutovic told SEN Breakfast.

“The Socceroos’ physio, Phil Coles, is actually over in the UK assessing him, and intriguingly, they’ve also got an independent doctor who will be assessing Aaron Mooy to make the call.

“The word I’m hearing from the FFA is that he will be ready to go for the Asian Cup.

“He might not be ready for the first game, but he’ll certainly be available for games two or three, which means they will pick him, and they will take him over to the Asian Cup.”

The 28-year-old has won 39 caps for the Socceroos, scoring five goals.

Australia face Jordan in their opening group game on January 6th as they look to defend their Asian Cup crown.
