14 Feb WATCH | VAR controversy mars Champions League tie
The VAR has come under fire yet again after two controversial decisions marred the Champions League Round of 16 tie between Ajax and Real Madrid.
The video assistant first intervened late in the first half, when the Dutch side had a goal overturned after Dusan Tadic was adjudged to have impeded Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from an offside position.
Courtois’ parry fell to defender Nicolas Tagliafico who nodded the ball home, but it was later ruled out, much to the home team’s dismay.
Ajax later equalised through Hakim Ziyech before the reigning champions netted a late winner through Marco Asensio.
The goal was shrouded in controversy as Lucas Vasquez appeared to haul down Frenkie de Jong in the build-up.
VAR was used but didn’t overturn the decision.
