25 Feb WATCH | Chelsea’s Kepa enrages manager by refusing substitution
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted after disobeying the orders of manager Maurizio Sarri during their League Cup final defeat to Manchester City overnight.
Sarri tried to replace Arrizabalaga with reserve shot-stopper Willy Caballero, after he was treated for cramp with the game locked at 0-0 and extra-time looming.
The Spaniard waved away Sarri’s instructions forcing referee Jonathan Moss to seek confirmation regarding the change.
After a brief discussion, the Blues boss reluctantly retracted the substitution and was visibly furious as he stormed towards the tunnel in disgust.
Arrizabalaga was unable to inspire Chelsea as City went on to win the penalty shootout 4-3 to claim their first piece of silverware of the season.
The 24-year-old is the world’s most expensive goalkeeper after arriving at Stamford Bridge for a fee of £71.6m from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao in the summer.
