Tim Cahill confirms retirement from football

Socceroos great Tim Cahill has confirmed his retirement from football.

Cahill, 39, had a six-month stay with Indian Super League club Jamshedpur FC but opted out of a new contract.

The midfielder began his professional career with English side Millwall before moving to Premier League club Everton where he scored 56 goals in 226 appearances.

He also had stints with New York Red Bulls and Shanghai Shenhua later in his career.

“I‘m an old man now in football years,” Cahill told Optus Sport when asked about his playing future.

“But I’m interested in TV, going to start my A Licence (in coaching) and spend quality time with my family and chill out for a bit.

“It was amazing to play in four big continents. I had a great career and I’m really thankful.”

Cahill bows out as Australia’s leading scorer with 50 goals from 108 caps.

He's also the only Socceroo to score at three World Cups.
