31 Mar Ola Toivonen nets historic A-League goal as Victory down Perth
Ola Toivonen scored the 5000th A-League goal as Melbourne Victory defeated league leaders Perth Glory 2-0 in front of a sell-out crowd at HBF Park.
The Swedish striker curled home a delightful free-kick in the 25th minute to give the reigning champions an early lead, writing himself into the league’s history books in the process.
It was Toivonen’s 11th goal for the campaign and it consigned the Glory to just their second defeat for the season.
Kevin Muscat’s men clinched the vital three points via a Keisuke Honda penalty on 67 minutes to breathe new life into the race for the Premiers Plate.
The Victory face second-placed Sydney FC at the SCG next Saturday night.
