WATCH | Spurs down Man City in remarkable circumstances

Tottenham Hotspur has advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in the most exceptional of ways.

Despite losing the second leg to Manchester City 4-3 this morning, Spurs are through to the final four of Europe’s elite club competition on away goals after it ended 4-4 on aggregate.

VAR played a major role in Tottenham's win after City throught they had won it in injury-time, but not before the game had started like a house on fire with four goals in 11 minutes.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for City in the fourth minute, Spurs striker Son Heung-min netted twice in three minutes and then Bernardo Silva added City’s second.

Just when proceedings started to slow down, Sterling bobbed up yet again on 21 minutes to give City a 3-2 lead on the night (3-3 on aggregate) going into half-time.

City hit the ground running in the second half and went ahead in the two-legged tie when Sergio Aguero struck just before the hour-mark.

The on 73 minutes, Fernando Llorente saw the ball deflect off his thigh and into the back of the net to essentially give Tottenham the lead on away goals despite the it being tied at 4-4.

And then the real drama occurred!

Sterling thought he had scored the winner only for VAR to overturn the decision, adjudging Aguero offside, and handing Spurs the win.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham will now meet Dutch club Ajax in the semi-finals later this month as City focus on their Premier League title defence.

Unfortunately for Spurs, two-goal hero Son will miss the first leg through suspension due to yellow card accumulation.

In Portugal, Liverpool easily accounted for FC Porto with a 4-1 second-leg victory to advance 6-1 on aggregate.

The Reds also move into the semis where Lionel Messi and Barcelona await.
