WATCH | Massive drama between Leeds and Aston Villa

There were simply unbelievable scenes in the English Championship this morning.

Leeds United and Aston Villa were doing battle in England’s second tier at Elland Road when controversy struck in the second half.

After Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia went down injured, the Villa defence stopped in anticipation of Leeds’ Tyler Roberts kicking the ball out of bounds to halt play to meet the sportsmanlike standards expected in English football.

However, the home side played on and Mateusz Klich scored in the 72nd minute while the visitors had stopped.

It prompted a fracas between the two sets of players which lead to Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi being sent off.

In response, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa instructed his players to allow Villa to walk in an equaliser from the re-start.

Defender Pontus Jansson did not agree with Bielsa’s command and attempted to stop the play before Albert Adomah scored.

Watch the drama unfold below:

After the game, Villa boss Dean Smith said: “The first mistake is the referee should give a foul against Kodjia in the centre circle. He doesn't.

“Everyone stops because Kodjia is down holding his calf. Tyler Roberts goes to put the ball out but puts it down the side instead. It's just not sportsmanlike at this level.

“I think common sense prevailed as did sportsmanship. Klich apologised to me as he came off the pitch. Things like that shouldn't happen.

“I suggested it (an unopposed goal) might be the right thing and he (Bielsa) agreed with me.”

The 1-1 draw sees Leeds sitting in third position on the Championship table while Villa are in fifth with one regular season match remaining.
