Aston Villa, Leeds in control after first-leg of Championship play-offs

Aston Villa and Leeds United will take slender advantages into the second-leg of their Championship semi-final play-off ties.

Villa overcame an early stutter to defeat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at Villa Park thanks to second-half goals from Conor Hourihane and Tammy Abraham.

Forward Dwight Gayle gave the Baggies an early lead before being sent off for a second bookable offence two minutes from time.

The second-leg takes place at The Hawthorns on Wednesday morning AEST.

Leeds United shade Derby County 1-0 at Pride Park thanks to a second-half strike from attacker Kemar Roofe.

Derby were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute but the decision was controversially overturned by referee Craig Pawson after consulting with the linesman.

The two clubs will clash once again at Elland Road on Thursday morning AEST.

The winner of the two semi-finals will meet in the Championship play-off final at Wembley to decide the final Premier League promotion spot.

Norwich City and Sheffield United have already won automatic promotion to England's top flight for next season.
