Should the A-League finals be scrapped? Muscat weighs in

Outgoing Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat says the A-League finals series should remain, despite calls for it to be scrapped.

Retired Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque wants the top-six finals system abolished, preferring to see the highest-ranked team be crowned as champions in what is the traditional format world-wide.

The Sky Blues beat Perth Glory on penalties in the A-League decider on Sunday, after finishing eight points behind the Glory at the conclusion of the regular season.

Muscat believes finals are “engrained” in the Australia’s sporting DNA.

“I’m not sure so,” Muscat told SEN Breakfast.

“I think what we need to do is pay more respect to the actual league winners. Somehow, we’ve got to celebrate that more than we have.

“On the other hand, the finals are engrained in our DNA in sport in this country and obviously most places in the world the league is celebrated the most.

“Finals is something that is engrained very deep in our veins, I don’t think that can be replaced.”
