18 Jun Report: Ex-UEFA president Platini arrested in Qatar World Cup probe
Disgraced former UEFA president Michel Platini has been arrested in relation to a corruption investigation into the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
According to French online publication Mediapart, Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday for questioning regarding the legitimacy of the bidding process to host the tournament.
The three-time Ballon d'Or winner headed up European football’s governing body until 2015, before being slapped with a four-year ban from football for ethics breaches.
Qatar gazumped bids from Australia, USA, South Korea and Japan in 2010 to win the right to host football’s biggest showpiece in controversial circumstances.
The tournament will take place in the months of November and December in 2022 – the first time the event will be staged in Winter.
