02 Jul Socceroos skipper joins English club
Socceroos captain Mark Milligan has signed for League One side Southend United on a one-year contract.
The deal includes the option of continuing in a coaching role beyond the 2019/2020 season.
Milligan, 33, joins from Scottish club Hibernian where he made 28 appearances last term.
"I'm very excited. It's always a process but to be down here now I can't wait to get started," Milligan said.
"The competitiveness of games at this level with sometimes three games a week, along with the ambition of getting the club back to the Championship, was also an important part in my decision."
Milligan is a two-time A-League champion with Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC who has also enjoyed overseas spells with Al Ahli, Baniyas SC and Shanghai Shenhua.
The utility has won 79 Socceroos caps and was a member of Australia's last four World Cup campaigns.
Southend narrowly avoided relegation last season, maintaining their League 1 status on goal difference.
