Former A-League referee at centre of VAR howler in EPL

Former A-League referee Jarred Gillett was at the centre of a controversial VAR decision that denied Arsenal a late winner in their Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

Gunners defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos had his 83rd minute goal chalked off by Gillett for a dubious foul in the build-up committed by Calum Chambers.

Palace were awarded a first-half penalty after Gillett correctly overturned the referee’s decision to book Wilfried Zaha for diving in the box.

Chambers was the culprit once again with Luka Milivojevic converting the subsequent spot kick.

The match ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw after Arsenal squandered a two-goal lead for the second time this season.

Gillett has officiated nine Football League matches and two Carabao Cup matches since departing Australia for the UK.

The 32-year-old has refereed five A-League Grand Finals. He was also named the A-League’s best referee on five occasions.
