04 Nov “It’s f—ed”: Wellington defender blasts contentious VAR call
A contentious VAR decision overshadowed Melbourne City’s 3-2 win over Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park on Sunday.
Referee Ben Abraham awarded City a penalty after Phoenix defender Louis Fenton was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.
Replays showed the cross hit the chest of Fenton before deflecting onto his arm.
The VAR upheld Abraham’s decision after lengthy deliberation with Craig Noone converting the subsequent spot kick to give the home side a 3-1 lead.
Fenton didn’t hold back when asked about the decision post-game.
“I thought 100 per cent no pen,” Fenton told Fox Sports.
"It didn’t f—ing hit my hand. It’s f—ed.”
Ben Waine scored a late consolation for the visitors but City hung on to claim maximum points and return to the top of the A-League table.
