Olyroos banned from 2020 Olympics over Cambodia incident

Three Olyroos have been banned from participating in next year’s Tokyo Olympics following an incident in Cambodia.

Lachlan Wales, Nathaniel Atkinson and Brandon Wilson have been suspended until August 10 next year, ruling them out of a potential Olympics campaign.

Teammate Riley McGree will be eligible for the 2020 Olympics with his ban concluding on April 1.

All four players will be unavailable January’s AFC under-23 championships – the qualifying tournament for the Olympics.

It comes after an extensive Football Federation investigation into a complaint from a woman while the four players were in Cambodia for the AFC under-23 championship qualifying tournament.

"These sanctions are commensurate to the nature of the breaches of the national code of conduct which is in place to safeguard both the players and the reputation of Australian football," FFA chairman Chris Nikou said in a statement.

"Upholding our commitment to respect and responsibility cannot be compromised.

"The players have understood the gravity of their actions and have positively commenced respectful relationship programs that will ensure they appreciate these values in the future."

It is unknown whether the quartet will appeal the sanctions.
