Aussie referee’s contribution to latest Premier League sacking

Quique Sanchez Flores is the latest Premier League manager to lose his job, sacked by Watford just 85 days into his second stint.

Saturday’s 2-1 loss to fellow cellar dwellers Southampton sealed Flores’ fate with the Hornets currently last in the Premier League with just one win from 14 games.

The Spaniard replaced Javi Gracia who was dismissed just four games into the season.

A controversial VAR decision from former A-League referee Jared Gillett allowed the Saints to equalise through striker Danny Ings.

Replays showed a clear handball in the build-up from Moussa Djenepo but the goal was still awarded after Gillett reviewed the incident from various angles.

The decision was a major turning point as Watford were 1-0 up at the time with just under 20 minutes left.

James Ward-Prowse’s winner five minutes later sealed the points for the home side in a crucial relegation six-pointer.
