03 Dec Is Postecoglou’s J-League success the greatest coaching feat in Australian football?
Ange Postecoglou is on the verge of becoming the first Australian manager to win the J-League.
Yokohama F. Marinos need to avoid a four-goal defeat at home to second-placed FC Tokyo on Saturday to win their first league title in 15 years.
Postecoglou, who quit as Socceroos coach after securing qualification for the 2018 World Cup, has been a revelation in Japan since taking the reins of a relegation-threatened Yokohama side.
Fox Sports commentator Simon Hill says a Postecoglou title triumph would go down as one of the greatest coaching achievements in Australian football.
“What Ange is doing is beyond compare,” Hill told SEN SA Breakfast.
“He’s on the brink of winning the Japanese title with Yokohama F. Marinos – it would take a miracle for them not to win it next weekend.
“That would go down as the greatest, I think, achievements alongside Tony Popovic winning the Asian Champions League with the Wanderers of any coaching in the history of our game.”
A Japanese championship would add to an already impressive Postecoglou CV that includes two A-League championships with Brisbane Roar and masterminding
Australia’s Asian Cup triumph in 2015.
