04 Dec Socceroos to face Messi in challenging 2020 Copa America group
Lionel Messi, Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Alexis Sanchez are some of the big names Australia will face during next year’s Copa America.
Drawn in the South Zone, Australia will take on Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay following today's draw.
Hosted in Argentina and Colombia, it’s Australia’s first Copa America appearance after being invited to participate in the tournament along with 2022 World Cup host Qatar.
Graham Arnold’s side will play all their pool games in Argentina with the top four from each group progressing to the quarter-finals.
It gives Australia the chance to pit themselves against world class opposition ahead of the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup.
“The Copa America is the oldest international football competition in the world and we are honoured to have received an invitation to compete,” Arnold said.
“With the draw now complete we will ramp up our logistical planning and scouting over the coming months, while maintaining full focus on the final four fixtures we have in round two of FIFA World Cup qualifying.
“Adding the Copa America to our schedule next year will mean that the Socceroos will play at least fourteen matches throughout 2020.
“This will mean that there are plenty of matches for fans to enjoy, but also provide us with the chance to work consistently with the squad as we prepare for round three of FIFA World Cup qualification.”
The 47th edition of the tournament begins on June 12 with the final to be played on July 12.
