08 Jan WATCH | Aussie scores stunning goal in Olympic qualifier
Wellington Phoenix young gun Reno Piscopo has scored a stunning long-range goal at the AFC under-23 championship in Thailand on Wednesday night.
Playing against Iraq at the tournament which doubles as qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics later this year, the 21-year-old unleashed a stinging free-kick from well outside the box to open the scoring in the 62nd minute.
Australia looked to be on course to record an opening-game victory before Iraqi substitute Qasem equalised in the 77th minute, with the game ending as a 1-1 draw.
“This goal, I dedicate it to the families back home in Australia, the victims (of the bushfires), so it was special for me," Piscopo said post-match.
Australia’s next assignment is against hosts Thailand on Sunday, with the top two from each group progressing to the quarterfinals.
The Olyroos haven’t qualified for the Olympics since 2008 and will need to finish as one of the top three teams to join Japan at the tournament later this year.
