19 Feb "We weren’t happy with what we were getting": Melbourne Victory CEO
Melbourne Victory CEO Trent Jacobs has shed more light into the decision to sack former coach Marco Kurz.
Kurz was relieved of his duties in January having won just four of 13 games while accumulating only 15 points – the equal lowest in the Victory’s history.
Jacobs conceded the German just wasn’t an appropriate fit for the club and is of firm belief the squad is good enough to salvage something out of this season.
“We’re constantly looking at planning, preparation and performance in the first team and we weren’t happy with what we were getting,” Jacobs told SEN Whateley.
“Marco is definitely a good person and a good coach, so we made a decision that we weren’t a fit for each other and when you make the decision you need to be decisive.
“We felt there was an opportunity in the A-League and now an opportunity in the (Asian) Champions League to get something from the season.
“We genuinely believe that the roster is good enough to be successful this season.”
Kurz’s replacement was Spaniard Carlos Salvachua who was announced as interim coach until the end of the season.
Salvachua is yet to win an A-League match from four attempts, but Jacobs feels his attacking philosophy mirrors what the Victory hierarchy expect.
“He (Salvachua) is a 20-year experience coach, offensive in his thinking – which is a fit for us – and we were also conscious that we didn’t want to create enormous waves with something completely different," Jacobs added.
"We wanted a level of continuity where possible to be successful this season.”
Salvachua guided the club into the Asian Champions League group stages, where their first up win over Chiangrai United was followed by a narrow defeat to FC Seoul on Tuesday.
The four-time A-League champions are floundering in ninth position domestically ahead of Saturday night’s match against Newcastle.
