24 Feb Report: More marquee players part of major A-League salary cap overhaul proposal
A-League clubs could be free to sign more marquee players as part of a major overhaul to the league’s salary cap.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, all 12 A-League clubs – including the league’s newest team Macarthur FC – could be able to sign five
marquee players each from next season if foreign signings are exempt from the salary cap.
It’s a move designed to improve the standard of football by acquiring bigger names to help boost attendance numbers and dwindling TV viewership.
The A-League’s current salary cap of 90 per cent of the $3.2 million would be retained but only for Australian-based players.
Clubs can currently sign a maximum of two marquee players outside the salary cap with agent fees, accommodation, some relocation costs, vehicle allowances all included in the cap.
