26 Feb UCL: Bayern leave Chelsea on the brink, Barcelona grab vital away goal
Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge has left the Premier League club teetering on the brink of Champions League elimination.
A brace from ex-Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry and another goal for Robert Lewandowski – his 11th in this year’s Champions League – put the German champions in complete control heading into the second leg of their Round of 16 tie.
Marcos Alonso was sent off late for the Blues who have a mountain to climb ahead of the return trip to Munich on March 19.
In this morning’s other game, Napoli and 10-men Barcelona played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadio San Paolo in Naples.
Dries Mertens opened the scoring for the Italians before Antoine Griezmann netted a vital equaliser to take back to the Camp Nou. Barcelona will be without suspended duo Sergio Busquets and Arturo Vidal for the second leg.
Vidal received a red card for two separate incidents. The Chilean midfielder fouled Fabian Ruiz before pushing his head into the face of the Ruiz.
“It showed the vision that Lewandowski’s got.” 🤩
Two goals from Gnabry but there was plenty to admire about his teammates also.
