29 Feb Premier League shock: Watford end Liverpool's long unbeaten streak
Liverpool have lost their first game of the Premier League season, going down to relegation battlers Watford 3-0 in a shock result this morning.
Jurgen Klopp’s men – who hadn’t dropped points since a October 20 draw against Manchester United – were thoroughly beaten at Vicarage Road.
An Ismaila Sarr's second-half double followed by a Troy Deeney goal with less than 20 minutes to play brought an end to Liverpool’s 45-game winning streak in the English top flight.
Liverpool entered the clash knowing just four more wins would be enough to secure a historic first-ever Premier League title but after losing to Atletico Madrd in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie last, they put in arguably their worst display of the domestic season on Saturday to slump to a shock loss.
Klopp praised the mentality of his team despite the comfortable defeat.
“They did exactly what they wanted to do, we did not,” he told Sky Sports.
“That’s how football works.
“The first half was a tough one, a lot of second balls, running here and there, we had the ball a lot but we didn’t come in the right positions to cross, the right positions to finish, against a really good, organised side, with a top set-up for this game.
“You have to accept it, it’s not so easy, but it’s the proof we were not good enough tonight. It’s always very difficult. We have to accept if after.
“In the game you have to fight. We were 3-0 down but we still tried, there were no silly situations where somebody got frustrated and tried to kick someone.
“If you win, good, if you lose, try to do it in the right manner and do it like a man.”
Liverpool remain 22 points clear on top of the table and next face Bournemouth at Anfield next Saturday.
