12 Mar UCL: Liverpool crash out, PSG advance, newcomers reach quarterfinals for first time
Atletico Madrid has sent reigning champions Liverpool crashing out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage.
Diego Simeone’s side beat the Premier League leaders 3-2 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.
Atletico stunned Anfield with three extra-time goals – a brace from Marcos Llorente and a sealer from Alvaro Morata – to book their place in the quarterfinals.
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp was critical of Madrid’s defensive approach over the two legs.
"It's so difficult to play a side like this,” a frustrated Klopp told reporters.
"I don't understand with the quality they have the football they play. They could play proper football, but they stand deep and have counter attacks.
"We accept it of course but it doesn't feel right tonight. I realise I am a really bad loser, especially when the boys put such an effort in against world class players on the other side who defend with two rows of four.”
PSG also booked their passage through to the final eight with a 3-2 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund.
First-half goals from Neymar and Juan Bernat sealed a 2-0 win for the Parisians in an empty Parc des Princes due to the threat of coronavirus.
On Wednesday morning AEDT, RB Leipzig and Atalanta advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time with comfortable aggregate wins over Tottenham and Valencia respectively.
