Is this the man to replace Jedinak as Socceroos skipper?

Former Manchester United and Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich believes defender Trent Sainsbury is the man to replace the retired Mile Jedinak as the next Socceroos captain.

Jedinak, 34, called time on his international career after winning 79 caps for Australia, skippering the Socceroos to two World Cups and leading the side to Asian Cup glory on home soil in 2015.

Bosnich doesn’t think that being coach Graham Arnold’s son-in-law should make a difference as to whether Sainsbury gets the captaincy or not.

“Me personally, I don’t think it should make a difference, I think the best man for the job should get it,” Bosnich told SEN Afternoons.

“At the moment, I would say Trent Sainsbury.

“In terms of the position he plays – he’s got a good view of the whole park.

“He’s been a superb performer as well and that is always important.

“Right at this moment in time, I think it’s him and the only other one you would be looking at is someone like Matthew Ryan or Aaron Mooy.

“As great a players as they are, I don’t think they’re in the captaincy material like Trent Sainsbury would be.”

Sainsbury, 26, recently joined Dutch giants PSV after an impressive World Cup for the Socceroos.

Arnold will be looking to appoint a new skipper with the Asian Cup set to get underway in early January in the United Arab Emirates.
