Can Liverpool outlast Manchester City in this season’s title race?

BBC sports broadcaster Jonny Gould expects Liverpool to push Manchester City all the way in this season’s Premier League title race.

Both clubs are currently unbeaten from their opening 14 matches with reigning champions City holding a two-point lead at the top of the table with the Reds continuing to snap at their heels.

The Merseysiders have recorded their best start to a Premier League campaign and are endeavouring to claim a long-awaited first league title since 1990.

“I think they (Liverpool) can draw them (Manchester City) close,” Gould told SEN Breakfast.

“The difference between Manchester City this season and last season is they have a truly, competent challenger for the title.

“I’m not talking about Chelsea, I’m not talking about Tottenham – I am talking about Liverpool, who have used the springboard of the Champions League run last season to improve yet again.

“Liverpool will take Manchester City all the way, but Manchester City are out on their own and I expect City to retain the title.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side recorded a dramatic 1-0 win over bitter rivals Everton overnight thanks to a 96th minute winner from Belgian forward Divock Origi.

No Premier League club has defended the title since Manchester United in 2009.
