The advantage Victory have in dealing with heavy A-League schedule

Melbourne Victory striker Kenny Athiu says the depth of their squad will give them an advantage in coping with their hectic A-League schedule.

The Victory defeated Newcastle 2-1 on Saturday night to complete their third game in a week and face another short turnaround when they travel north to face Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow night.

Despite being without a host of key players including marquee man Keisuke Honda, Athiu is confident they have the personnel to notch another crucial three points against the Roar.

“It’s tough on the body, but that’s why we’ve got the squad that we have and the depth to rotate players,” Athiu told SEN Breakfast.

“We’re well equipped to deal with the fixture schedule.

“We’re travelling up today, we had a good recovery yesterday as a team and we’re going to have a light session today; more of a tactical session and hopefully turn up and get the win.”

The 26-year-old highlighted the importance of immediately returning to winning ways against the Jets after their 2-0 defeat to Adelaide United last Wednesday night.

“It was a much-needed win for us,” Athiu added.

“We needed to show that the loss against Adelaide was just a one-off and that we could bounce back.

“It was such a short turnaround, so we tried to concentrate more on the positives.”

Kevin Muscat’s men sit second on the A-League table, six points behind league leaders Perth Glory.
