06 Mar WATCH | Ajax send holders Real Madrid crashing out of Champions League
Real Madrid’s three-year reign as European champions is over.
In one of the greatest upsets in Champions League history, Ajax thrashed Los Blancos 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu to progress to the quarter finals 5-3 on aggregate.
Trailing 2-1 after the first leg, the Dutch giants handed the 13-time winners their biggest home defeat in European competitions.
First half goals from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres turned the tie on its head before Dusan Tadic added a third on the hour mark for Erik ten Hag's side.
Marco Asensio pulled a goal back for the home side, but the result was sealed moments later when Ajax midfielder Lasse Schone scored a sensational free-kick to stun the Madrid crowd.
It’s the first time Ajax have made the final eight in Europe’s top competition since 2003.
Tottenham also advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to a 1-0 over Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund.
Harry Kane’s second-half goal was enough to complete a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate win over the Germans.
The Premier League side eased their way into their first Champions League quarter-finals appearance since 2011.
