Mariners sack coach after historic A-League defeat

The Central Coast Mariners have sacked coach Mike Mulvey after Saturday night’s 8-2 loss against Wellington.

The loss was the equal heaviest defeat in A-League history, with the Mariners also suffering an 8-2 defeat against Newcastle last season.

As a result, the Mariners have parted ways with coach Mike Mulvey, effective immediately.

The club made the announcement in the early hours of Sunday morning, via a statement.

The statement said: “The Central Coast Mariners can today advise that the Club has parted ways with Head Coach Mike Mulvey, effective immediately.

“With six games remaining in the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season, the club will issue a statement when a decision has been made regarding who will lead the team during this period.

“At this stage, there are no other changes to the club’s other coaching and football support staff.

“The Central Coast Mariners wish Mulvey all the best in his future endeavours and him for his service to the Club.”

The Mariners have only won one game this season and sit on the bottom of the A-League table.

They will face the Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, hoping to bounce back from a nightmare performance against the Phoenix.
