14 Mar WATCH | Mane, Van Dijk inspire Liverpool to famous win over Bayern
Liverpool has advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals after an impressive 3-1 win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Stadium.
With the tie delicately poised after a scoreless draw in the first leg, Sadio Mane gave the Reds the early initiative with a vital away goal on 26 minutes.
Bayern equalised via an own goal from defender Joel Matip before half-time but struggled to create any meaningful goal-scoring opportunities for the remainder of the match.
Jurgen Klopp's men knocked the wind out of the Bavarians' sails when Virgil van Dijk’s towering header restored the Premier League side’s advantage on 69 minutes.
The result was sealed when Mane netted his second and Liverpool’s third to deliver the knock-out blow on Niko Kovac’s side.
It’s the first time Bayern have fallen at the Round of 16 stage since 2011, while Liverpool march onto their second consecutive last-eight appearance.
The Merseysiders join Premier League rivals Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham in the draw for the quarter-finals.
