24 Apr WATCH | Southampton striker scores fastest ever Premier League goal
Southampton’s Shane Long scored the fastest ever Premier League goal in their 1-1 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road.
The veteran striker pounced straight from the kick-off, blocking a clearance from Hornets defender Craig Cathcart before dinking the ball over the oncoming Ben Foster.
Long’s goal came in 7.69 seconds, breaking the 19-year-old record held by former Tottenham defender Ledley King.
King netted after 9.82 seconds against Bradford in December 2000.
“It’s a record, is it?” Long told Sky Sports News.
“Straight from the kick-off we wanted to put them under pressure. 99 times out of a hundred you block it and it doesn’t work but this time it did.
“It’s nice to have a record like that, but it would have been nicer if it was the winning goal.”
