WATCH | 14yo ball boy the architect of Liverpool winner

There is a new cult hero in Liverpool and its not a player or coach!

Divock Origi scored a 79th-minute winner as the Reds came from three goals behind to defeat the Spanish champions 4-0 in the semi-final second leg, 4-3 on aggregate.

The winning goal was made possible by some clever thinking from 14-year-old ball boy Oakley Cannonier who was quick to distribute to Trent Alexander-Arnold who was on corner duties.

The end result was a rapidly taken corner which was finished expertly by Origi.

To make this story even more intriguing, it turns out that new hero Cannonier trains with the Liverpool academy at Kirkby, while 20-year-old Alexander-Arnold is himself a Reds academy product and former ball boy.

The Independent suggests that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp filtered a message through to Carl Lancaster, who is a coaching mentor at the Reds' academy, and responsible for organising the ball boys.

His instructions were to tell the ball boys to "serve Liverpool’s players as swiftly as possible" due to a weakness in Barcelona's defence – that they at times dawdle.

The intervention of the unlikely combinaton paid off and has helped the Merseyside club qualify for the Champions League final where they will meet Premier League rival Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid on June 2 (Sunday morning AEST).

Liverpool will be chasing their sixth Champions League title.
