20 May Aussie defender makes Bundesliga debut after A-League rejection
Young Australian defender George Timotheou made a shock debut for Bundesliga giants FC Schalke against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Timotheou played the full 90 minutes and helped his side keep a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw at the Veltins Arena in their final game of the campaign.
The 21-year-old centre-back arrived in Gelsenkirchen from NPL side Sydney Olympic in 2018 after he was cut by A-League champions Sydney FC.
He failed to make a senior appearance for the Sky Blues having earned promotion to the first team from the club’s youth setup.
Timotheou, a Canberra native, will look to play a more prominent role when he enters the final year of his contract with the German outfit.
