Aston Villa win Premier League promotion in $312m play-off triumph

Aston Villa has gained promotion back to the English Premier League after defeating Derby County 2-1 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley overnight.

Goals either side of half-time from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn sealed Villa’s return to England’s top-flight after a three-year absence.

The Midlands club will earn an estimated $312m in revenue from football's most lucrative one-off match, exorcising the demons from last year's play-off final loss to Fulham.

Villa stormed into promotion calculations on the back of a 10-game winning streak during the final months of the campaign, before defeating West Bromwich Albion on route to the final.

Dean Smith’s side join Norwich City and Sheffield United as the three promoted clubs to enter England’s top-tier for the 2019/2020 season.
