23 Jun "I feel like I let the team down": Matildas out of World Cup
Matildas skipper Sam Kerr says she felt like “she let the team down” after she missed Australia's first penalty in the shootout against Norway.
During regulation time, Norway struck early through Isabell Herlovsen before Elise Kellond-Knight’s corner soared through the goal to level the scores at the 83rd minute.
After extra time, the teams couldn’t be split and the game was taken to a penalty shootout.
Kerr took Australia’s first spot kick and missed it.
From there, it all went downhill, as the Matildas lost the penalty shootout 4-1, ending their World Cup journey.
Kerr says she felt responsible for the downhill spiral in the shootout.
“I’ve been trusted to take it and I was confident in taking it and I just skewed it,” she said.
“I’ll grow from this and become a stronger person mentally.
“The girls have already gotten around me. I feel like I let the team down but they’ve been quick to cut that out.”
Fans were left fuming before the shootout though, as defender Alanna Kennedy was sent off late into extra time for grabbing the shirt of her opponent before the duo tumbled to the ground.

The Norwegians were clinical. The Matildas weren't.
