Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has been appointed as the club’s new head coach on a three-year contract.

Lampard succeeds former boss Maurizio Sarri who departed after a solitary season to join Serie A champions Juventus.

The 41-year-old left Championship side Derby County following one year in charge to complete a sensational return to Stamford Bridge, where he made 648 appearances and won 11 major trophies as a player.

“I am immensely proud to be returning to Chelsea as head coach,” Lampard said in a statement.

“Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we have shared, however, my sole focus is on the job in hand and preparing for the season ahead.

“I am here to work hard, bring further success to the club and I cannot wait to get started.”

Lampard is the 10th full-time managerial appointment under the ownership of Russian businessman Roman Abramovich.

The Londoners finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Europa League last season.
