09 Jul Europe move for Kerr a “two-edged sword”: Gallop
FFA CEO David Gallop says he would prefer to see Sam Kerr remain in the W-League but recognises the benefits of a move to a European club.
Kerr has been linked with a move away from Perth Glory with Chelsea reportedly keen on luring her to England’s FA Women’s Super League on two-year contract worth $1 million.
The Matildas star finished 6th in the 2018 Women's Ballon d'Or and was the second highest goal-scorer in the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
“It’s a bit of a two-edged sword I have to say,” Gallop told SEN Mornings.
“It is wonderful to have Sam part of Perth Glory; part of the W-League and she then goes and plays in the US. I think it’s a great thing for Australian football for her to be playing in the domestic competition.
“At the same time, I think we saw from this World Cup that the European clubs are starting to invest in women’s football and are really showing that they are great places for the players to be at.”
“If Sam did take the decision to go to Europe, she would certainly be in a big club with big investment in women’s football.
“At this stage we’ll be seeing if we can keep her at the Perth Glory.”
Following the Matildas' Round of 16 World Cup exit, Kerr is currently playing for the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women's Soccer League in the US.
